It might not have been at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miamiâs iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
âThe swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,â Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a current administration.
âUnless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,â Levine Cava continued. âMay this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.â
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling âsix-sevenâ â deriving from a hip-hop line â often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently declared âsix-sevenâ its 2025 word of the year.
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary âaway from grills and cookwareâ, according to the eventâs official press release.
âThis swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,â said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
âIt captures the spirit of Miami: vibrant, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.â
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
