This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
