Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Venus stated. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Officials pointed out that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to take part in an Australian Open main draw, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.
