Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
