According to the UN refugee agency, in excess of 60,000 individuals have left the city in Sudan of el-Fasher, which was seized by the militia RSF during the weekend.
Reports indicate summary killings and crimes against humanity as militia members stormed the city after an extended encirclement featuring food shortages and intense shelling.
The exodus of those escaping the fighting towards the community of Tawila, approximately 80km (50 miles) west of el-Fasher, had increased in the last several days, per United Nations refugee agency spokesperson.
They were describing shocking accounts of violence, including rape, and the organization was finding it difficult to secure enough accommodation and food for them.
All children was experiencing nutritional deficiencies, she commented.
It is estimated that in excess of 150,000 people are currently stranded in el-Fasher, which had been the army's last fortress in the western part of Darfur.
The RSF has disputed widespread accusations that the executions in el-Fasher are ethnically motivated and follow a practice of the Arab militia groups focusing on non-Arab communities.
Nevertheless the RSF has detained one of its fighters, Abu Lulu, who has been implicated in extrajudicial killings.
The force distributed recordings depicting the militiaman's arrest following identification that he was involved in the killing of numerous civilians near el-Fasher.
Digital platform has acknowledged that it has banned the profile connected to Lulu. The status remains unclear whether he had controlled the profile in his name.
Sudan was plunged into a internal conflict in April 2023 when a vicious contest for control broke out between its military and the Rapid Support Forces.
It has led to a famine and accusations of mass killing in the western Darfur region.
More than 150,000 people have died in the war around the country, and roughly 12 million have fled their residences in what the United Nations has described as the world's largest humanitarian emergency.
The takeover of el-Fasher solidifies the geographic split in the country, with the Rapid Support Forces now in command of the western region and significant areas of neighbouring Kordofan to the south, and the army occupying the main city, Khartoum, central and eastern regions along the Red Sea.
The opposing sides had been partners - taking over together in a takeover in 2021 - but disagreed over an foreign-endorsed plan to advance to democratic governance.
