Democratic officials voiced anger after former President Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a disputed video.
The clip, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past worked in defense or defense roles.
"Like us, you all made an oath to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the representatives stated in the short video. "At present, the threats to our constitution are not only from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to execute orders that violate the law or our founding principles."
The recorded statement reportedly provoke a angry reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he wrote: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our United States. Their statements cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership issued a combined declaration censuring the statements.
"Violent politics has no place in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who appeared in the video all acted our United States with great national pride and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these extreme social media posts and withdraw his violent language before he causes harm," the announcement continued.
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a response.
"We are former service members and defense specialists who care for this country and swore an oath to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president views it punishable by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they execute their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "Every American must unite and condemn the president's calls for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of elected officials."
He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very dangerous, you have prominent officials of Congress advising soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in US history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and decide all that."
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the president is responding to," the representative said. "We see sitting members of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the president's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can result in people getting killed, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
