The acclaimed broadcaster and filmmaker, Sir Humphrey Burton, has died at 94 years old.
He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.

Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton became one of the industryâs most admired broadcasters, bringing the wonder of classical music to the general public.
He was the BBCâs head of music and arts during the 1960s and 1970s, winning awards for programmes such as The Golden Ring.
He also founded the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a platform that discovered soloists such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.
Media figures and institutions expressed their sadness, noting his profound influence on generations of cultural producers.
One senior executive said, âVery sad news â but what a life, and what a legacy... A man so full of grace, warmth, and brilliant anecdotes.â
An honorary society honoured him, declaring he had done more than most to showcase music's marvels and established a standard of excellence.

In a message from his loved ones, he was described as âdeeply lovedâ and his dedication to spreading the joy of music was called âmotivating.â
Among his many achievements was helping to establish a television network and fronting the arts show Aquarius.
The accolades he garnered featured three British Academy awards and four Emmys, with a knighthood awarded to him in 2020.
In his 2021 autobiography, he voiced a desire for broadcasters to be bold with new music programmes, lamenting a drop in audience for talent competitions.
