As Beachgoers Ran From Violence, Viral Photo Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, views the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On a recent weekend night, she, like many others in the area, detected cracking sounds echoing around the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw signaled something was wrong.

While standing on the street, conversing with a pair who had hurried up the slope soaked, she became aware of someone moving up at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing in the direction of Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the opposite way that all the others was trying to escape from, while holding that big kit and unshod … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every part of you would signal you to move in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely full throttle running.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage In the Wake of Crisis

The photograph taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of moments of heroism in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, law enforcement and paramedics treating numerous victims.

Community Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to emerge from the local area, with the patrol base adjacent to the site of the attack serving as a impromptu medical station. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, including rushing into the water to assist people in distress.

After the tragedy, statements of appreciation were shared. An online statement expressed appreciation for the individuals who exhibited that “goodness will always overcome darkness”.

The group of beach patrol later shared a communication, saying they were “processing what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful words and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the compassion directed at our team,” the team stated. “In time, we will tell our tales in the hope that it supports those impacted.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many permanent lifeguards, said that the staff performed exceptionally from the instant the violence commenced until late that evening.

“There have been so many powerful accounts, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” said a local official.

“The team demonstrate altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned beaches safe for visitors, but what we witnessed on that evening should be commended.

“As we grieve and grapple with the terror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the midst of such evil.”
