A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January surged in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
A single trader, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet these probabilities had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other platform users also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Politicians are growing concerned.
A bill presented on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to politics.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
